The Baby Birdie

Long ago, a little boy we know came upon a dead baby bird on the driveway after a big thunderstorm. His family can still quote him exactly:

“The wain hitted him on da head.

“The thun-dare scaaaaaaaaa-wed him.

“The lightning struck-teded him, and dead-eded him.”

He said it solemnly. He said it sincerely. And no one will ever let him live it down.

But hey: I have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t love baby birdies.

I’m right there with them. Recently, a bird got caught inside our porch. She kept throwing herself at the windows, repeatedly stunning herself when what seemed to be air,…

Behind the Back Tire

There’s a family man in Omaha who parked his truck in the driveway every night and went inside to his wife and daughter. He had cares, of course, but overall he was happy, healthy and living the American dream.

And then one day he went out to his truck, started it up and backed down the driveway . . .

. . . not realizing that his little daughter was playing behind the back tire.

The Sights of Sedona

We took our college-age daughter Maddy and her three besties to Sedona for the day last week. The red rocks were stunning, the sky was impossibly blue, and the place that has been celebrated as one of the most beautiful in the world lived up to its reputation.

I was more than a little troubled, though, that many of the tourists were buying in to the phony “vortex” superstitions and patronizing the cheesy anti-Christian New Age businesses.

A few assumed Near Eastern meditation poses from other religious traditions, or chanted repetitively. They paid for the privilege to walk a special labyrinth,
