Good old Al Tennyson. He was right: “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”

But in Autumn . . . it’s thoughts of PARTY!!!!!

It’s that time of year, when college kids set up TV’s and loud music with kegs and gleaming lights in the back yards of their rental abodes. In the crisp fall air on those weekend nights, they let loose and can sing and shout and laugh ‘til the wee hours.

Three delightful young men I know, in midtown Omaha, set up a party like that last weekend. The neighbors saw the preparations going on, and braced themselves. But guess what? The crowd was mature and sedate – a lot of fun, a lot of Frisbee-tossing – but everybody had left by 9 p.m.

These are serious students – very nice and fun-loving, but very mature and self-controlled, too.

One neighbor lady was so shocked and relieved that she came over the next day with a huge plate of chocolate chip cookies to thank them for NOT keeping her kids up all night with raucous partying.

Now, that’s a payoff worth earning again next time!

Let every one of us please his neighbour

for his good to edification.
